Energy company Phelan Green, through its clean fuels subsidiary Phelan eFuels, has selected industrial technology manufacturer Honeywell’s renewable fuel process technology for its planned electro-sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) facility in Saldanha Bay, in the Western Cape.

Specifically, Phelan eFuels will deploy the Honeywell Universal Oil Products Fischer Tropsch (FT) Unicracking process technology, which uses FT liquids and waxes made from CO2 to create eSAF that complies with aviation industry standards.

Construction of the Saldanha Bay facility will start in the fourth quarter of this year.

The facility is being built to help position the country as a competitive export hub for next-generation aviation fuels.

Once operational, the project will be one of the world’s first commercial-scale eSAF production facilities, supplying more than 140 000 t/y of eSAF to the EU and the UK, Phelan Green says.

Honeywell’s FT Unicracking process technology was selected because it provides a proven, bankable pathway to produce SAF at scale, says Phelan Green chairperson Paschal Phelan.

“This project is a major milestone for Phelan Green and for South Africa’s emerging e-fuels economy.”

The new facility forms a core part of the Phelan Green Hydrogen Project – a R47-billion private investment that has been formally recognised by the South African government as a nationally strategic green industrial development, the company adds.

“Honeywell’s technologies are designed to enable scalable, efficient and flexible production of low-carbon fuels. Our FT Unicracking process technology will help support Phelan eFuels’ goal to encourage commercial-scale SAF production in South Africa,” says Honeywell UOP president Rajesh Gattupalli.
